Joel William Baumiller was born April 7, 1958 to Raymond and Alice (DeVries) Baumiller in Parkston, SD.  He attended Parkston High School and graduated in 1976.  During his Junior Year in High School, he enrolled in the Army National Guard and was stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO for basic training. He proudly served his country for 21 years. He was united in marriage to his true love, Donna Marie Berg, on July 21, 1979 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston.  He lived on the farm near Parkston where he milked cows for 19 years.  There were a lot of memories made in the milk barn.  Joe started his own trucking business, J&D Trucking, and drove his red truck for several years before working for the Hutchinson County Highway Department where he eventually became Highway Superintendent, where he recently retired in February 2025.  Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He had a passion for hunting and fishing and enjoyed many hunts with his brother, Doug, and other friends.  He hunted every season, from deer in South Carolina to pheasant, deer, geese, elk, and antelope all over SD, he was there for it all.  He enjoyed camping with his “crew” where he would enjoy a stiff one and play Hucklebuck.  He loved to support his grandchildren in all their activities, traveling to South Carolina to visit hunting friends and spending time in the basement with neighbors.  Sundays were reserved for church and during football season, watching the Dallas Cowboys.  Joe was an avid watcher of Gunsmoke from his recliner and looked forward to taking care of his chickens and calves and caring for his garden.  He loved his wife and children and spending time with them and any extra family that happened to be around.  He was the best storyteller, had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.  His positive outlook on life will not be forgotten. He will surely be missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Donna of Parkston; 4 daughters: Tonya (Jason) Pape of Chillicothe, IL; Jennifer (Ryan) Leischner of Parkston; Amanda (Matt) Horstman of Parkston; and Brandi (Jeremy) Wermers of Parkston; 12 grandchildren: Hannah and Cole Pape, Sutton, Culley and Mosley Leischner, Lainee, Layton, Liam, Lenox and Ledger Horstman, and Braxton and Bristyl Wermers; a sister, Pam Thuringer of Delmont; a brother, Doug (Mary) Baumiller of Parkston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Swayzee Leischner; a brother-in-law, Jim Thuringer, and father-and mother-in-law, Cornelius and Mary Jane Berg.
