Loren "Louie" Louis Ludwig Obituary

Sioux Falls – Loren "Louie" Louis Ludwig, 79, went to his heavenly home Friday, November 7, 2025 at Sanford USD Medical Center, surrounded by family. Memorial service will be Saturday, November 15 at 10:30 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour. Visitation will be Friday, November 14 from 5 to 7 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer service.

Loren was born on January 29, 1946, in Dorchester, Wisconsin, to William and Elda Ludwig. He graduated from Dor-Abby High School in 1964, where he served as class president. Loren proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1967, including a tour of duty in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart.

On August 17, 1968, in West Bend, Wisconsin, Loren married the love of his life, Karen Werkmeister. Together, they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with six children: Terry, Tammy, Brian, Randy, Cindy, and Douglas.

Loren worked for the West Bend Company for 22 years, a career that took him and his family to Roy, Utah; Sheridan, Arkansas; and back to West Bend, Wisconsin. In 1987, Loren and Karen purchased Ludwig Lanes in Armour, which they owned and operated for nine years. Later, Loren worked at Trail King in Mitchell before retiring.

A lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and Share holder, Loren was thrilled to attend the game at Lambeau Field with family the weekend before his passing. He delighted in playing fantasy football with his grandsons.

An avid bowler and golfer, Loren found joy and camaraderie on the lanes and the greens. He cherished time spent with friends and family in pursuit of these beloved pastimes, which often brought laughter and friendly competition to family gatherings. A man of great spirit and warmth, Loren especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, kind heart, and wonderful sense of humor.

Loren is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his children, Tammy (Todd) Hawley of Armour, SD, Brian (Pam) Ludwig of Sioux Falls, SD, Randy (Pam) Ludwig of Sioux Falls, SD, Cindy Buck of Armour, SD, and Douglas (Bobbie) Ludwig of Custer, SD; his brothers, Ronnie Ludwig of Rhinelander, WI, Gordon (Delores) Ludwig of West Bend, WI, Lance (Karen) Ludwig of Dorchester, WI, and Greg (Betsy) Ludwig of Ironwood, MI.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Brandi, Clinton, Tyler, Paige, Quinn, Tucker, Braden, Ashton, Kyle, Kirsten, Katilyn, Madison, Kingsley, Brooke, Jeremiah, Brielle, and Willie; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Loren is further survived by his sisters-in-law Claire Ludwig of Pahrump, NV, Jan Ludwig of West Bend, WI, Donna Breuer of Armour, SD, Tammie Werkmeister of Armour, SD, and Darlene Werkmeister of Gilbert, AZ; and by his brothers-in-law Darold Werkmeister of Armour, SD, and Allen Werkmeister of Gilbert, AZ—men he loved as dearly as brothers and with whom he shared countless memories and adventures.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elda Ludwig; his infant son, Terry; his sister, Carol Peissig; his brothers, Jerry and Terry Ludwig; his brother-in-law, Jim Peissig; and his sisters-in-law, Kitty Ludwig, Bonnie Ludwig, and Mary Werkmeister.

Loren’s laughter, love for life, and devotion to his family will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
