Dean was born November 26, 1932, to Chandes and Amanda (Hoffman) Simmons at the family home near Milltown, South Dakota. He attended country school until the 8th grade and graduated from Parkston High School. After graduation, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he proudly served until, he was honorably discharged. Upon returning home to Milltown, Dean began his lifelong career as a dedicated farmer. He cared for a wide variety of animals over the years, including cows, dogs, cats, chickens, and even peacocks, and took great pride in the work he did. Dean was a committed member of the Milltown United Brethren in Christ Church, where he faithfully served in numerous offices throughout his life. Dean was deeply involved in his community and local schools. He was honored as a “Hometown Hero” in Parkston and recognized as “Fan of the Year” for his unwavering support of school activities. He enjoyed both playing and watching sports, including football, track, softball, basketball, horseshoes, and bowling. He took great pride in speaking at the Memorial Day service each year at the cemetery in Milltown. Beyond sports, Dean treasured the outdoors and enjoyed antelope and deer hunting in the hills with his nephew, Brad, fishing and gardening. Dean loved spending time with his family and was such a playful uncle, enjoying many hugs and teasing the little ones, especially Karson and Nora.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two sisters; Darlene Juhnke of Parkston, South Dakota and Mavis Pribyl of Olympia, Washington; sister-in-law, Joan Simmons of  Keystone, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dale; brothers-in-law Clinton Pribyl and Bill Juhnke.
