Dick was born on May 2, 1935, in Armour, South Dakota, to Theodore “Ted” and Hazel (Schroeder) Hrdlicka. He attended school in Armour through the eighth grade before serving his country in the United States Army for two years. Following his military service, Richard returned home and dedicated his life to farming. On November 2, 1963, Dick was united in marriage to Betty Stock. Together, they built a life centered on love and family and were blessed with five children. At the age of 73, Dick made the meaningful decision to accept Jesus Christ into his life, a moment that brought him great peace and strengthened his faith. Dick found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed watching westerns, favorite being Gunsmoke, as well as boxing and baseball. He also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Lily, who held a very special place in his heart. These interests, along with the companionship he cherished, brought him comfort and happiness throughout the years.
He is lovingly remembered by his three sons, Doug (Faith YellowHawk) Hrdlicka of Huron, SD, Rodney Hrdlicka of Tripp, SD, and Brian Hrdlicka of Springfield, SD; his daughter, Tammy Fleming of Lexington, NE; his brother, Roger Hrdlicka of Spokane, WA; his sister, Gloria Alley of Yankton, SD; 25 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Hazel Hrdlicka; his beloved wife, Betty; his daughter, Machelle VanCleave; his grandson, Keith; his brothers, Larry, Bob, and Denny Hrdlicka; his brother-in-law, Kenny Alley; and his sisters-in-law, Helen, Jan, and Peggy.
