Delores was born on March 10, 1939, in Orchard, Nebraska, on the family farm to Marion Boham and Mildred (Konopasek) Boham. Her father, Marion, passed away when Delores was just two years old, and she was lovingly raised by her stepfather, Harry Smith. She grew up surrounded by the values of faith, family, hard work, and kindness that would guide her throughout her life. On September 27, 1958, Delores was united in marriage to the love of her life, Verne Thomas Carda, in Verdigre, Nebraska. Together they built a life centered around faith, family, community, and caring for others. Delores devoted much of her life to nursing and compassionate caregiving. She graduated from St. Mary’s School of Practical Nursing in August 1957 and worked at Wagner Community Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston, and later at the Armour Nursing Home, where she continued caring for others until her retirement. She was a member of the Altar Society and found joy in serving both her church and community. Delores had many talents and hobbies that reflected her creative and nurturing spirit. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, ceramics, gardening, baking, canning, volunteering, and raising bottle lambs. She especially loved taking care of her yard and creating lasting memories through many adventures with her grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Verne; children: Casey (Karen) Carda of Armour, South Dakota; Veronica Carda of Rapid City, South Dakota; Carla Carda of Rapid City, South Dakota; Verlyn (Trish) Carda of Estes Park, Colorado; and Colette (Shawn) DeVries of Rapid City, South Dakota.
She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 3 step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Walter (Sharon) Boham of Verdigre, Nebraska; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents.
Delores will be remembered for her caring heart, steady hands, warm kitchen, beautiful quilts, and the love she poured into her family and everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of kindness, faith, and devotion will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
