Steff leaves behind a profound legacy of resilience. A man whose charisma brightened every room he entered, Steff lived his life unapologetically and with a determination that inspired everyone lucky enough to know him.
Born on August 17, 1952, in Parkston, SD, to Mary Jane (Wudel) and Francis Mechtenberg, Steff grew up alongside his younger siblings Kenneth, Barbara, and Susan. From a young age, he embraced adventure as a Boy Scout, enjoying everything from canoeing to woodwork. His strong work ethic took root early as he worked at his father’s service station and served as a Student Manager for the Parkston High School Football team.
Following high school, Steff attended trade school for autobody mechanics and headed north to Mobridge, SD. He quickly put his skills to work in the autobody industry while embracing community life, joining the local Jaycees and coaching a women's softball league. A true motorhead through and through, Steff had a lifelong love for cars. Over the years, he curated an enviable collection, one notable being a 1983 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am he nicknamed "Lightning." Of course, given his deep passion for powerful engines, Steff was famously known for saying speed limits were merely suggestions.
Steff transformed his passion for cars and life in the fast lane into a highly successful, 32-year career with PPG Industries. Beginning in November 1985 as a Territory Manager across the Midwest, he was instrumental in launching the original Deltron DBU basecoat line. By 1993, he relocated to the Cleveland area to successfully launch the Light Industrial Coatings division—a critical branch that still thrives today. In early 1995, Steff was elevated to Regional Manager of PPG’s new Region 27, leading ten Territory Managers across SD, ND, NE, WY, MT, and portions of MN and IA. Steff took immense pride in his career. Not just for strides it took him to get there, but for the people he worked with. To him, the team he oversaw and the businesses he served were never just professional connections; they were an extension of his own family.
Shortly before his promotion with PPG, Steff started another exciting chapter and began a family of his own. In April 1994, Steff welcomed his daughter, Jessica, with his then-wife, Ann. While co-parenting in Sioux Falls, SD, Steff cherished having Jessica by his side. She quickly became his favorite +1, eagerly tagging along to PPG car shows, business meetings, movies, and concerts. He shared his love for music with her from the very beginning; instead of traditional nursery rhymes, Steff raised Jessica on The Beach Boys, teaching her the words to “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “Barbara Ann.” Their frequent road trips were soundtracked by eras from the 60s to the 80s. They built cherished memories attending live concerts together, seeing musical legends like Cher and Chicago.
In December of 2000, Steff survived a life-altering car-pedestrian accident while on business in Las Vegas, Nevada. Defying all odds, he made a miraculous recovery. His PPG team, rallying around the man famous for facial hair, even created "got MechtenBEARD?" shirts as a fundraising effort during his rehabilitation. His eventual return to work for PPG for nearly another decade stands as a powerful testament to his hardworking drive and unwavering character. Steff proved time and again that no obstacle was ever too large to conquer, serving as a living reminder that anything is possible as long as you are willing to fight for it.
Taking on early retirement in 2009, Steff moved to a specialized living facility in Omaha, NE, near his sister Susan. He cherished their regular outings together, indulging in his favorite pastimes from ice cream cones to movies at the cinema eating popcorn and Diet Mountain Dew.
Throughout his life, Steff had a special way of connecting with people. He possessed a unique, beautiful gift for making every conversation meaningful and ensuring that the people around him felt truly seen. Family and friends who knew him loved him deeply and remained in awe of his courage, strength and continued optimism towards life.
Even on his most difficult days, Steff refused to let his ongoing nerve pain dampen his spirit. If you asked him how he was doing, he would always answer with a resounding and enthusiastic, "WONDERFUL!" To everyone who loved him, please find peace in knowing that Steff is now with God, entirely free from pain, and truly, eternally, "WONDERFUL!"
He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Mechtenberg of Minneapolis, MN; his parents, Mary Jane and Francis Mechtenberg of Parkston, SD; his brother, Kenneth (Beverly) Mechtenberg of Harrison City, PA; his sisters, Barbara Mechtenberg (Robert) Ruffinott of Yankton, SD, and Susan (Roger) Reicks of Omaha, NE; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
