Dave John Hoffman Obituary

The Lord has called his faithful servant, David John Hoffman, home at the age of 75. Funeral mass will be Thursday, July 9 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston.  Visitation will be Wednesday, July 8 from 4:30 to 7 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer service, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston.    Dave will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the community he loved so dearly. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life defined by faith, service, hard work and love. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.

Dave was born February 15, 1951, to Norbert and Annabelle (Ernster) Hoffman in Mitchell, SD. He was the oldest of nine children of which he claims he changed every one of his sister’s diapers.

Dave attended Emery Grade school before moving to Dimock, SD in third grade, where he graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul grade school. He attended Parkston High School where he lettered all 4 years in football. It was in those years he met the love of his life, JoAnn Lang. They were married on July 31, 1970, beginning a marriage that would span more than five decades. A man of deep faith, Dave lived his beliefs every day. He faithfully attended daily mass alongside JoAnn, and their faith was the foundation of their life together.

Together Dave and JoAnn built Parkston Independent Fertilizer Company working side by side for 33 years. Later, Dave started Dakota Consulting Services allowing him to continue doing what he loved – talking with farmers, scouting fields and helping them succeed. He served as the Hutchinson County Emergency Manager for 20 years working through several disasters.

Dave believed that if you cared about your community, and you rolled up your sleeves you could make it better. His commitment to Parkston was evident in every chapter of his life. He devoted 38 years to city government, serving on the city council from 1985 – 2000, before serving as the Mayor of Parkston from 2000-2023. He served 37 years with the Parkston Fire Department, including as the Fire Chief, after first volunteering as an EMT. Dave’s leadership extended through the community. He served as President of the Parkston Jaycees, where he was honored as South Dakota Outstanding Jaycee Member of the year. He also served as President of the Parkston Commercial Club and Parkson Development Corporation, was a lifetime member of KC’s, a member of the Parkston Athletic Booster Club, Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 247, served on the Parkston Centennial Committee, and contributed to countless other organizations. Parkston wasn’t simply where Dave lived, it was home, and he never stopped working to make it a better place.

Dave loved sports and loved to have the opportunity to cheer on his children and grandchildren. He always had a few coaching tips ready after the game. He played first base in baseball before moving to softball and enjoyed golf, even if he stood on “the wrong side” of the ball. He loved to play cards of any kind and dominoes. He loved goose hunting during a blizzard, deer hunting in the Black Hills and road hunting for pheasants. But if there was one place Dave was the happiest, it was on the water with a fishing rod in his hand and his wife and family by his side. Anyone who fished with Dave heard his favorite saying “You can’t catch fish if your line isn’t in the water”.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn, children Robert (Karen) Hoffman of Tea, SD, Nicholas (Amy) Hoffman of Norfolk, NE, Mark (Amber) Hoffman of Flandreau, SD, Becky (Trent) Bialas Tea, SD. Grandchildren Christian (Matlyn) Hoffman, Wilson (Molly) Hoffman, Mackenzie Hoffman, Jacob Hoffman, Tobin Hoffman, Ethan Hoffman, Sage Hoffman, Ella Hoffman, Hayden Bialas, Luke Hoffman, Emery Hoffman, Hanley Bialas, Evan Hoffman & Georgie Hoffman; Great Grandchildren Raylan Hoffman and Maren Hoffman. His mother Annabelle Hoffman, siblings, Doug (Jan) Hoffman, Terry (Darcy) Hoffman, Mary Meyer, Linda (Keith) Mueller, Patty (Tim) Moran, Diane Hoffman, Renee (Tom) Semmler; Brother-in-Laws- Ralph Kappenman, AJ (Kristie) Lang, Larry Lang (Susan Nelsen), Derald (Debbie) Lang. A host of nieces, nephews, and greats, and all those he met he called friend.

He was preceded in death by his father, Norbert Hoffman, sister Kathy Kappenman and In-laws Ed & Dorothy Lang.

In lieu of flowers, honor Dave’s memory by sharing your love with those closest to you.
