Kathleen Mary Thompson, 75, went to her heavenly home on Monday, August 17th, 2026. Visitation will be Friday, August 21st, from 5:00–7:00 p.m., followed by a prayer service. A funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Gary DeRouchey will be held Saturday, August 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Armour. Interment will take place at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery immediately following Mass. Lunch will be held in the parish hall following the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/ Arrangements are being made by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Armour.
Kathy was born on October 11th, 1950, in Platte, South Dakota to Paul and LaVonne (Ahrens) Oberbroekling. Kathy and her five siblings grew up on the family farm in Geddes. After graduating from Geddes High School in 1968 Kathy briefly pursued a career with the airline before she decided the sky was not for her. Kathy met Terry in High School, and their romance was rekindled upon her return from Kansas. The Thompson’s were married on July 17th, 1971, in Geddes, they settled in Armour and built a life raising their two daughters with love and happiness. Kathy and Terry decided that their family was missing something, so they completed the Thompson’s with Nicholas’ arrival in 1986.
Kathy was a familiar face around town, working at The Rocket, Krull’s, and the City of Armour. In the 1990s, she and Terry opened T&K Car Care. Above all, Kathy cherished her family and especially treasured time spent caring for her grandchildren. Her grandsons were her pride and joy. She enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including watching crime shows and NASCAR, as well as working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. In 2023, Kathy moved to Prairie Villa Assisted Living in Armour. After her Alzheimer’s progressed in 2024, she moved to Edgewood Memory Care in Mitchell, where she remained until her death.
Kathy is survived by her three children, Michelle (Ernie) Bertram, Denise (Bruce) Sparks, and Nick (Isabelle) Thompson; her five grandchildren Ryan (Kassidy) Bertram, Ethan Bertram, Ty Sparks, Trey Sparks and Owen Thompson; her great-granddaughter, Aurora “Rory” Bertram; her siblings Mary Holzinger and Gene (Jayne) Oberbroekling; her sisters-in-law, Carol Oberbroekling, Patsy Amundson, and Sandee Gordon; her brother Jim Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband, Terry Thompson; her parents Paul and LaVonne Oberbroekling; her parents-in-law Johnnie and Darline Thompson; her brothers, Raymond and Denny Oberbroekling; her sister Sam (Susan) Anderson; her brothers-in-law, Neal Anderson, Rick Holzinger, John Amundson, and Stan Gordon; her sister-in-law, Debbie Leichtman; her nephew, Johnny Amundson; her niece Jennifer Leichtnam; and her beloved grand dog Hank, whom she loved dearly.
