Obituary of Genevieve Dolores Wempe

Genevieve Dolores (Hughes) Wempe, 94, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at her Mitchell home. Funeral mass will be Monday, April 2 at 10:00 am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at 1 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Parkston. Visitation will be Sunday, April 1 at Holy Spirit Church in Mitchell from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service following. Arrangement by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston.

Genevieve  was born January 3, 1924 to Edward and Mary (Benz) Hughes of St. Paul, MN. Following high school, she worked as a telephone operator at Tower Telephone Company and enjoyed reminiscing experiences spent there. Following a courtship during WWII, Gen and Milt (Robert Milton Wempe) were married March 5, 1946 in St Paul. Gen and Milt made their home and raised their eight children in Parkston, SD. In 2002, Gen and Milt relocated to Countryside Living in Mitchell, SD. Gen enjoyed family, friends, embroidery, reading and crossword puzzles. She is remembered for her smile, love, joy, kindness, graciousness and nonjudgmental nature towards all.

She is survived by seven children: Joan Honomichl, Mitchell; Jerry (Ginnie), Sioux Falls; Jack (Diane), Harrisburg; Jim (Sandy), Port Orchard, WA; Joe (Donna) Austin, TX; Jay (Deanna) Mitchell; Jill (Jim) Hyde, Pierre; 24 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, son Jeff, son-in-law Jim Honomichl, granddaughter, great grandson, parents and 5 siblings.
