Richard “Dick” Andrew Walton, 80, of Clearfield, SD, passed on March 10, 2017, in the Lake Andes AseraCare Hospice, Lake Andes, South Dakota. Dick was born January 3, 1937, in the family farm home near Clearfield, SD, to the parents of Ralph Andrew Walton and Freda E. (Wagner) Walton. His Father, Ralph, passed away from complications from pneumonia soon after his birth. Guy E. Walton then married Freda, and Dick loved and admired him dearly. He grew up on the family farm with 2 brothers, Ralph “Dean”, and Albert “Abe”, and 4 sisters, Joyce, Laverna, Elinor, & Kay. He attended grade school in a nearby country school, and High School in Winner, South Dakota. He entered the military from 1960 to 1962. He was a Jeep driver; and enjoyed being stationed in Normanburg, Germany. He took liberties to travel, including to Spain, which he said was one of his favorite places. Following his time in the military service, Dick moved back to the family farm, and worked for his Dad. He lived in the Rock house. Dick had various jobs, besides farming. They included back-hoe owner/operator; dirt work and road maintenance; ditch-work; owned cattle; hired out to help other farmers; trained horses; worked at meat-packing plant in Nebraska; built pasture fences. Dick enjoyed working for his brother Dean, and wife Norma, doing farmwork, haying the fields, and helped in butchering the pigs. Dick’s passions were working with, training, and riding horses. He would often share stories about his favorite horse, “Babe”. When asked what was one of his favorite memories of his youth, he replied that he enjoyed getting up very early and riding the pastures early in the morning, to check on cattle and listen to the “stillness”. When asked what was his favorite food, he replied that his favorite was his Mother’s liver and onions. And he especially liked to eat it cold the next morning while riding horse and working on the farm. He enjoyed playing and watching baseball, and playing guitar and singing with his family. He loved to remind all around him that he was related to professional baseball player, “Pepper Martin”, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Throughout his years, he subscribed to all baseball channels on Dish Network. Dick also was known having a love of dogs throughout his life-time, “Boog” being his favorite name for his dogs. Dick is survived by his three daughters, Michelle (Tim) Williams, of Gillette, Wyoming, and their son, Jordan, (Krista) and his three children, Adyson, Teegan, and Kayson. Stacie Weinheimer of Onida, SD, and her five daughters, Witnie, Shalie, Aubrie, Brylie, and Landrie. Dixie (Rick) Fiala of Baltic, SD, and their three children, Sierra, Sydnie, and Shae. He is also survived by his sisters, Elinor (Bob) Blomstrom of Gregory, SD; Kathryn “Kay” (Ronnie) Foster of Ashland, OR; LaVerna (Roy) Bechtol of Coulee City, WA; sisters-in-law, Katherine “Kay” Walton and Norma Walton; and many nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends.
