Armour - Elmer Oscar Werkmeister, 96, went to his heavenly home Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Golden Living Center in Armour. Funeral service will be Thursday, February 2 at 10:30 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 1 from 5 to 7 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Armour. Elmer was born August 5, 1920 to Adam and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Meister) Werkmeister in Douglas County, SD. He was united in marriage to Luella (Kappler) on October 7, 1945 in Delmont, SD. They were blessed with 4 children and over 50 years of marriage. Elmer farmed until 1964 when they moved to West Bend, WI. During their stay in Wisconsin, Elmer was employed at Mallard Coach, building trailer homes, and then at Gehl Company. After the shift at Gehl was done, he had a part time job building houses. In 1979, Elmer and Luella moved back to Armour, SD. During his retirement, he helped to build the homes of his kids. You would always find him busy doing something as he didn't like sitting around. In 1996, Luella passed away. Elmer remarried and spent another 20 years of marriage with his second wife, Ileen Grosz Kappler Werkmeister. Elmer was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. His faith was very important to him. He enjoyed deer hunting with his sons and grandsons. Pheasant season was always a happy time for Elmer. He enjoyed the time spent with the Kappler families and his own sons and grandsons. Elmer also enjoyed the times that he spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Grateful for having shared his life are his 4 children: Darold (Tammie) Werkmeister, Karen (Loren) Ludwig and Donna Breuer all of Armour, and Allen (Darlene) Werkmeister of Gilbert, AZ; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: LeRoy (Verna) Werkmeister and Leonard (Sylvia) Werkmeister, both of Armour; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Lizzie; wife, Luella; second wife, Ileen; 3 brothers: Louie, Walter, and Art; 5 sisters: Mary, Clara, Gladys, Maggie and Elsie; a daughter-in-law, Mary; a grandson, Terry; and great-grandson, Michael.
