Obituary of Mary Catherine McCann

   Parkston - Mary Catherine McCann, 92, died at her home in Parkston, SD on Thursday, September 19, 2019. Memorial service will be Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston with burial following in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Parkston. 

   Mary Catherine McCann was born on March 29th, 1927 to James and Diana (Metier) Wade in Weldon, Iowa. She graduated from Weldon High School in 1944 and went on to attend Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. On June 3rd, 1947, she married John P. McCann in Leon, Iowa. John and Mary started their family as he attended medical school at Creighton University and completed his residency in Lincoln, NE. With little ones in tow, the couple moved to Parkston, SD in 1954, where John practiced medicine for the next 28 years. They were devoted to each other and together created a loving home in which to raise their children. After retiring to Sun City, AZ, Mary and John loved traveling across the USA and overseas, taking in all kinds of sights and culture, including an African safari. Mary enjoyed spending time with family and always remembered what was going on in everyone’s lives. She was an avid reader, liked playing cards, and loved both playing and watching golf. Mary was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston, the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters. She passed away peacefully in her home in Parkston on Thursday, September 19th, 2019.

   Mary is survived by her five children: J. Michael McCann (Kathleen) of Dickinson, TX; Catherine Bowar of Parkston, SD; Tom McCann of Kingwood, TX; David McCann (Jenny) of Houston, TX; Patrick McCann (Kim) of Dimock, SD; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

   She was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents; two infant daughters, Patricia and Nancy; son Dan; son-in-law, Pat Bowar; and sister, Harriet Bane.
