Dr. Charles Monson, MD was born in Sioux Falls, SD on May 25th, 1933 to Grant and Cecile (Beaulieu) Monson. He grew up in the Sioux Falls area. He died on January 13, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by family. Growing up in Sioux Falls, he held a variety of jobs including delivering papers, setting bowling pins and working at Dairyland Creamery. He had a love of baseball and he pitched many innings for Sioux Falls Legion Post 15. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion. As a young man, he joined the 147th Field Artillery Unit of the South Dakota National Guard. He, along with the rest of the unit, was deployed to Alaska during the Korean Conflict where he served as a mechanic. Upon discharge, Charles pursued his GED and attended Augustana College and the University of South Dakota. He received a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of South Dakota. He completed his residency in Wichita, KS through the University of Kansas. While in medical school in Vermillion, he met Katheryn Millage and they were married June 16th, 1956. The family moved to Parkston, SD in 1961, where he began his medical practice. Over the next 35 years, he cared for thousands of patients, delivered over 1700 babies and made countless house calls with his trusty black bag at his side. In his spare time, he pursued many interests including golf, fishing, hunting and reading. He was very talented in drawing and watercolor painting and he shared his artwork with many friends and family to enjoy. Charles valued education and never missed an opportunity to continue his own learning and to teach others. He is survived by his six children Tim (Jenni) Fargo, ND, Marci Gehring (Brooks) Bozeman, MT, Brenda Sturgeon, Springfield, SD, Mark (Lisa Kneifl), Sioux Falls, SD, Rob (Angie), Parkston, SD, Ericka Ronnings (Patrik), Delano, MN., one brother Ed Monson (Beverly), Sioux Falls, SD, one sister Cecile, Perham, MN, thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Kay, his parents, and his son-in-law Lyle Sturgeon. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to the Kay Monson Memorial Scholarship Fund through Avera St Benedict Hospital in Parkston, SD. The funeral service will be held Saturday January 21st, 10:30, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston, SD. A reception with the family will follow in the church hall. The family would like to display some of his original artwork during the reception. Please consider bringing any artwork that you may have from Dr. Monson for the service.
