Obituary of Joel W. Meyer

Please share a memory of Joel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joel W. Meyer was born December 27, 1961 to Wayne and Carol (Florey) Meyer in Denver, Colo. After graduating from Arvada West High School in 1980, he explored a variety of interests, taking art classes and passing happy seasons as a self described ski bum and instructor. He worked in the medical field where he enjoyed the hustle and bustle of helping patients in the hospital before setting out to see the country as a long haul truck driver. He always came home to Colorado with stories of his adventures—if you ever wanted to know how they load oranges onto a truck, Joel knew that, and plenty else besides. He next went to work for Douglas County Colorado Road and Bridge, where he learned the skills that eventually brought him to Armour, where his parents were born and raised. In 2013, Joel accepted the position of Highway Superintendent for Douglas County and settled in Armour. He loved bowling, photography and corny jokes, but mostly he loved spending time swapping stories with all the people he met along the way. Although he did not spend his whole life in Armour, he made a mark on the community, serving as a city councilman for several years and joining the local bowling league with friends and neighbors.  After a life of laughter and adventures, Joel went to his heavenly home Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. He was 61.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Vikki Wylie of Aurora, CO; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Teresa Meyer of Lakewood, CO; and niece, Brooke Wylie of Denver, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Carol Meyer and grandparents, Alvin and Martha Meyer and Ted and Clara Hochhalter.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made on Joel’s behalf to the Denver Dumb Friends league Buddy Center of Castle Rock, CO https://www.ddfl.org/donation-center.

There will be a graveside service held in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at a later time.
