Obituary of Leeann Mumm

On Monday October 23, 2017, Leeann Agnes Mumm, age 51, set sail for brighter
shores. ‘Lana’ arrived February 7, 1966 in Rapid City, the youngest of 10 children born
to Ralph and Lavonne (Larson) Mumm. Lana had Downs Syndrome, but that did not
diminished her eagerness to learn and enjoy life to it’s fullest.
As a child , Lana lived in both Rapid City and Aberdeen. Later the family moved to
Chapel Hill, Texas, where Lana graduated from High School. In 1994, she moved to her
parents’ hometown, Geddes, South Dakota, and resided there until their death in 2001.
After her parents’ passing, Lana moved to Heritage Acres in Sturgis to be closer to her
siblings. She lived independently in her own apartment and volunteered for the meals
on wheels program. She was active in Special Olympics, swimming aerobics, and St.
Francis of Assisi Church. She called bingo and loved to play dominos (quite
competitively) with fellow residents. Lana traveled to London for her nephew’s wedding,
toured Stonehenge, enjoyed a production of The Lion King, and took the Eurostar train
through the Channel Tunnel to Paris, where she saw the Eiffel Tower
In June of 2013 Lana moved to Sitka, a group home in Rapid City that is part of Black
Hills Works. Both Heritage Acres and Sitka provided a community that allowed Lana to
live as independently as possible. The loving support of that community never wavered,
continuing on during Lana’s last days, when many, many caregivers and friends visited
her at the hospital.
Lana is survived by her nine siblings, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. We
thank you for the outpouring of love and support you have given our sister and aunt.
Those who knew Lana know her love was in her hugs, and you felt that love every time
she was with you. We wish our sister and aunt Godspeed and eternal happiness.
Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 27th, at 3:00pm at St. Ann Catholic Church in
Geddes. Burial to follow at Pleasant Lawn Cemetery .
