Parkston – Erwin E. Kost, 97, went to his heavenly home Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.  Funeral service will be Monday, October 21 at 10:00 am at Parkston Congregational Church in Parkston.  Visitation will be Sunday, October 20 from 5 to 7 pm, with a time of sharing and remembrance at 6:30 pm, at Parkston Congregational Church in Parkston.  Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.

Erwin was born February 5, 1927 to Edward and Lydia (Fauth) Kost on the family farm in Hutchinson County, SD.  He attended country school near the farm through the 8th grade.  He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1953.  He was united in marriage to Leona Friederich on August 2, 1953  at the Denewitz Lutheran church near Tripp, SD.  The couple farmed until 1995 when they retired and moved into Parkston.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and was a member of Parkston Congregational Church where he sang in the men’s choir.  He was also a member of the Parkston American Legion and enjoyed playing cards with his family, fishing, bowling and car rides around the countryside. 

Grateful for having shared his life are his 2 children: Diane (Orlyn) Olfert of Madison, SD, and Kelly (Catina) Kost of Mitchell, SD; daughter-in-law, Annette (Holman) of Mitchell; grandchildren: Jacob Kost, Patrick & Ashley Olfert from Sioux Falls, Tyler Olfert from Sioux Falls, Kristina (Colin) Neuharth from Wishek, ND, and Brittney (Nathan) Radford from Madison and 4 great-grandchildren, Kjerstin, Kaelyn, Gracelynn and Katy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona; and son, David who died suddenly in 2012; 2 brothers, Edmond and Raymond; and a sister, Elva Brosz.
