Mildred Margaret Hartmann Obituary

Parkston – Mildred Margaret (Hogrefe) Hartmann, 90, went to her heavenly home Thursday, December 12 at Avera Bormann Manor. Funeral service will be Thursday, December 19 at 10:30 am at St. Peter Lutheran Church near Armour.  Visitation will be Wedndesday, December 18 from 5 to 7 pm, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm, at St. Peter Lutheran Church near Armour.  Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Armour.


Mildred was born on January 15, 1934, to Henry and Margaretha (Buehner) Hogrefe at the family farmhouse east of Parkston, SD. She was baptized at home and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, rural Clayton, SD. She attended country school, graduated from Parkston High School in 1952, and then attended Presentation College in Aberdeen and became a registered nurse in 1955. Mildred was united in marriage to Paul Hartmann on August 15, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD. After raising their seven children and farming near Armour, SD for 31 years, she and Paul moved to Brighton, CO in 1987 where Mildred worked as an RN in a nursing home while Paul attended Colorado Aero Tech. They moved to Cromwell, CT where she continued working at a nursing home while Paul worked for Pratt and Whitney until 1989 when they moved to Millbrae, CA when he began working for United Airlines. Mildred was the Director of Nursing at Hillhaven Nursing Facility in Burlingame, CA until they retired in 1996 and moved back to South Dakota to their acreage near the family farm. She was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, rural Armour, where she was involved in the American Lutheran Church Women and later Women’s Missionary Federation. She loved quilting with her friends at church and at home, making quilts for all her children and grandchildren.


Grateful for having shared her life are her 7 children: Karen (Jeff) Harrison of Taichung, Taiwan; Daniel (Barbara) Hartmann of Beresford, SD; Maurice (Julie) Hartmann of Mitchell, SD; Ronald (Deborah) Hartmann of Divide, CO; John (Rosa) Hartmann of Brandon, SD; David (Joanne) Hartmann of Armour, SD; and Stephanie (Jesse) Kaufman of Sturgis, SD; 19 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and brother Ray Hogrefe, sister Lois Rather, and sister-in-law Marion Hartmann.


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul and his parents, brother Lawrence Hogrefe, brothers-in-law Loris Rather and Marvin Hartmann, sisters-in-law Esther Hogrefe and Cleva Hogrefe-Wenzel and nephews Steven Hartmann and Steven Hogrefe.
